RESUMO

The time evolution of the one-particle distribution function of an N-particle classical Hamiltonian system with long-range interactions satisfies the Vlasov equation in the limit of infinite N. In this paper we present a new derivation of this result using a different approach allowing a discussion of the role of interparticle correlations on the system dynamics. Otherwise for finite N collisional corrections must be introduced. This has allowed a quite comprehensive study of the quasistationary states (QSSs) though many aspects of the physical interpretations of these states still remain unclear. In this paper a proper definition of time scale for long time evolution is discussed, and several numerical results are presented for different values of N. Previous reports indicate that the lifetimes of the QSS scale as N1.7 or even the system properties scale with exp(N). However, preliminary results presented here indicates that time scale goes as N2 for a different type of initial condition. We also discuss how the form of the interparticle potential determines the convergence of the N-particle dynamics to the Vlasov equation. The results are obtained in the context of the following models: the Hamiltonian mean field, the Self-gravitating ring model, and one- and two-dimensional systems of gravitating particles. We have also provided information of the validity of the Vlasov equation for finite N.

RESUMO

Ten halogenated monoterpenes (2-6 and 8-12) related to the novel antitumor compound halomon (1) or to the carbocyclic analog 7 have been isolated from different geographic collections of the red alga, Portieria hornemannii. Structures were assigned to the basis of spectral analyses (primarily NMR and MS). The absolute configuration of isohalomon (2) was further established by X-ray crystallography. The compounds were comparatively evaluated alongside 1 and 7 in the U.S. National Cancer Institute's in vitro human tumor cell line screening panel. The results provide some interesting initial insights into the structure/activity relationships in this series.

RESUMO

Non-profit human service organizations, both public and private, face unique challenges and opportunities in the climate of the 1990s as human needs are increasing, funding is decreasing, and threats to organizational well-being are encountered. The purpose of this paper is to describe, advocate for, and illustrate a strategic planning model which facilitates a proactive, energizing, futuristic vision as services are being planned and delivered. Three case examples are used: a large state-run county social services department; a small, private, sectarian agency that provides group home services for the developmentally disabled; and a medium sized federal public health hospital.

RESUMO

Pyrophen, a novel 4-methoxy-2-pyrone derivative of L-phenylalanine isolated from cultures of Aspergillus niger, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with a = 8.918(1), b = 9.199(3), and c = 18.092(4) A. The structure was solved by direct methods and the absolute configuration assigned by the Bijvoet method. Refinement gave R = 0.045 and S = 1.78 for 1677 reflections with I greater than 3 sigma (I). Though numerous other pyrone natural products are known, including other products of A. niger, this is the first report of an amino acid-pyrone derivative.

RESUMO

The cyclic hexadepsipeptide mycotoxin Destruxin B, produced by Metarrhizium anisopliae, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P212121, with a = 11.010(2)A, b = 14.679(5)A, c = 21.273(7)A and Z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares technique to a final unweighted R value of 0.051, for 3361 reflections with I greater than 3 sigma (I). The backbone of the peptide is asymmetric and is made of 5 trans peptide and ester units and 1 cis peptide unit. The backbone conformation of this cyclic depsipeptide is very similar to that of Roseotoxin B, an analogous mycotoxin produced by Trichothecium roseum. The conformation in the crystalline state also correlates well with the solution conformation, as reported from proton n.m.r. studies. The crystal packing is directed by van der Waals contacts.

RESUMO

The concept of dignity is developed from an ethological perspective. Special attention is given to innate, phylogenetically programmed behavior, the role of releasers, the importance of rituals, and the fact that "management problems" in institutions are often cries for dignity. Observations of geriatric patients admitted to a nursing home are given, but it is believed that the generalizations apply equally well to institutionalization in other settings such as residential centers for young people, correctional facilities, or mental hospitals.
